Improving the well-being of vulnerable young people through art

This pedagogical guide is based on the use of artistic biography, an innovative approach to supporting the development of vulnerable youth through art. Aimed at professionals in education, child protection, and psychosocial support, the guide offers practical tools and methods for integrating artistic practices into educational activities. It encourages reflection on professional practices while emphasizing artistic biography as a key tool for transforming approaches and activities.

Artistic biography enables young people to express their life experiences through creative processes, focusing on three main themes: identity, culture, and the environment. By engaging in this method, young people are invited to explore their personal stories, values, and perspectives on the world while developing their imagination and creativity. This process contributes to their overall well-being, fostering both resilience and empowerment, which are essential for overcoming challenges and thriving in challenging or fragile environments.

The guide is the result of research conducted in crisis contexts, including with Yazidi youth in camps in Iraqi Kurdistan and in marginalized communities in Romania. It highlights how artistic practices such as creating collective murals, writing, theater, or photography can foster cooperation among young people while connecting them to their identity and culture. The aim is to help them develop practical skills and artistic talents while creating works that reflect their experiences and aspirations.

In addition, the guide provides practical advice for educators, facilitators, and artists seeking to implement collaborative and creative projects. It offers methodologies for organizing workshops, encouraging youth participation, and developing artistic projects that have a meaningful impact on their well-being. Through artistic biography, the guide promotes a true cooperative engineering approach, where every team member, whether professional or young participant, is actively involved in the creative and transformative process.
